Check the sticker

Tired of feeding your kid crunchy peaches? I know I am:

“TUCSON, Ariz. - A University of Arizona professor has invented a sticker that can tell consumers if a fruit or vegetable is ripe. The stickers will be available to growers next year and should make their way to supermarkets within two to three years, said Mark Riley, a UA assistant professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering.” - AP

Now if someone would invent a color changing milk box, that would be sweet.

A DJ friend of mine emailed me a song, Party In My Tummy, he thought my son would like. He described it as a “booty-bass” track. I like the song, as does my son, and we both wanted more. So I asked said friend to find out where it came from… which led me to Yo Gabba Gabba!. Biz Markie doing beatbox lessons for kids? Where was this show when I was two-years-old?

The weekend walkthrough (July 28 - 30)

Filed under: Yak — Big Poppa (aka Dez Williams) @ 9:08 am

POP’S PICK: We’re going for the rural digital experience this weekend at the Wave Farm. We know a couple of guys that are taking part in this outdoors show that promises to generate as much buzz as the mosquitoes, Noseeums and Deer Fly we’re sure to encounter … and there is also talk of a bear.

FRIDAY
FlavorPill
The Kung Fu Importance of Being Earnest
when: Fri 7.28 (9pm) *get a sitter and go
where: Brick Theater (575 Metropolitan Ave, Wbrg, 718.907.6189) map
price: $10
Even if you saw BAM’s recent production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, there are two good reasons to see it again: a) Michael Gardner’s adaptation brings a side-splitting zaniness to the play via the strangely fitting incorporation of martial arts interludes, and b) because it’s one of the best theatrical comedies ever written, still fresh as a dandy over 100 years later. Set in the 1890s, this ensemble piece revolves around two Englishmen with alter egos that are employed to conduct covert business and/or excuse themselves from unwanted affairs. But here, Gardner pumps up the comedy of manners with high-kicking hijinks as conflicts bubble over. The final selling point? One character is played by a weeble-wobble. (JKG)

SATURDAY
FlavorPill
Wave Farm
free103point9 presents Spectral Garden feat. Matthew Burtner, Nicolas Collins, and Scanner
when: Sat 7.29 (3-9pm)
where: free103point9 Wave Farm (5662 Rt 23, Acra, 518.622.2598) map
price: FREE
The free103point9 Wave Farm is a touchy-feely place, but it can be a damn good break to take from NYC’s pavement-boiling summer malaise (and even the saltiest city crank would be hard-pressed to resist their well-strung hammocks). As a part of their summer event series, the nonprofit arts organization invites three sound artists to put their grant money where their MIDI controllers are for an afternoon in the meadow, testing out big words and vague phrases like “ecoacoustics” and “the experimental terrain between sound, space, image, and form.” Matthew Burtner’s noise-based Studies for Radio Transceiver explores the nature of radio, while Nicolas Collins and the British sound artist Scanner work with cell phone conversations and broken broadcasts — appropriately, metropolis in decay. FlavorPill
Warm Up feat. the Juan Maclean w/ Adam X, Jeffrey Sfire, and the Rogers Sisters
Sat 7.29 (3-9pm)
P.S.1 (22-25 Jackson Ave, LIC, 718.784.2084)
$10
New York represents well today with freak-disco DFA kings the Juan Maclean, bangin’ techno avatar Adam X, Ghostly (mostly) minimalist Jeffrey Sfire, and — kicking things off — indie-rock trio the Rogers Sisters. (JL)

SUNDAY
FlavorPill
JellyNYC presents Pool Parties feat. Of Montreal w/ Enon, Irving, and Asobi Seksu
when: Sun 7.30 (2-8pm)
where: McCarren Park Pool (Lorimer St btwn Driggs Ave & Bayard St, Wburg)
price: FREE
Most nugazer acts take one of two approaches: they either go aggressive, piling tons of noisy layers la Serena Maneesh, or strip down the guitars and momentum for a stab at Sigur Rós’ dreamy atmosphere. Succeeding by avoiding such narrow conceits, the songs on Asobi Seksu’s latest, Citrus, are first and foremost grounded in melody. There’s lots of intoxicating pummel-and-drift, but the well-balanced songwriting and endearing English/Japanese vocals from frontwoman Tuki keep things interesting throughout. Despite the wide recent acclaim, the New York band is just opening today’s free show, which hits you with four flavors of indie rock: LA’s summery collective Irving, the slightly spastic local unit Enon, and art-pop eccentrics Of Montreal, headlining. (JPC)

UrbanBaby
Fiddlin’ Around
Have brunch with the acclaimed bluegrass-inspired band, Astrograss, as they delight and serenade kids of all ages with an eclectic mix of original material, choice covers ranging from Jimmy Webb to Guns n’ Roses, and an occasional foot-stompin’, yee-haw-inspiring fiddle hoe-down.
When: Sun., 7/30, 11am-1pm; All ages; $12/Families (Under 2 free).
Where: Willy Bee’s Family Lounge, 302 Metropolitan Ave. at Roebling, Brooklyn, 718-599-3499

FlavorPill
SummerStage presents Lady Sovereign w/ Pete Rock, Jean Grae, and DJ Rekha
when: Sun 7.30 (3-7pm)
where: Central Park SummerStage (Rumsey Field at 72nd St, 212.360.2777) map
price: FREE
To say that Lady Sovereign has ridden the coattails of recent UK rap invaders Dizzee Rascal, the Streets, and M.I.A. doesn’t do her justice. While she, too, display their amped-up energy, nimble wordplay, and pop charisma, the fearless rude-girl has a unique, playfully combative style all her own. The pint-sized 20-year-old prepares to stage her own attack on America in October with her first full-length, Public Warning — on Def Jam, after suitably impressing Jay-Z — but tonight Sov headlines a powerful female lineup with MC Jean Grae and Bollywood ‘n bhangra-banging DJ Rekha, while legendary producer/DJ Pete Rock plays odd man out. (JRC)

Note: Gates open at 1pm and early arrival is suggested. Bollywood Disco feat. DJ Rekha and Eddie Stats hits the Canal Room on Thur 7.27 (11pm).

“DEAR MARGO: I am a teenager and have a problem with my parents. My mom is 44, and my dad is 50. Recently, they’ve started going out and basically partying all the time.

My mom says she has raised kids for 30 years and she is done doing it. (There are six kids, and I’m not the youngest.) I feel like I am raising two teenagers. When I try to talk to them about it they say, “Oh, you are just like your sister. You don’t want us to have any fun. And besides, we never got to be teenagers.” - Dear Margo

Nanny-fabulous

Filed under: Yak — Big Poppa (aka Dez Williams) @ 8:55 am

Kelly and Max are best friends, but it is possible that their parents don’t know each other. Kelly’s and Max’s nannies are also best friends, which makes sense since they both sport that air of ghetto fabulousness only fellow inner-city women get.

On a recent play date, Max’s nanny held her cellular phone precariously between thumb and index – because of her long painted nails she resembled some kind of exotic raptor displaying its freshly caught prey.

“Mutha fucka keep calling me,” she said as the two toddlers played at her feet. She was referring to the unnamed person I can only assume is her courtier. “But I done told that nigga that I ain’t just givin’ it up like dat. Y’know-what-I’m-sayin’?”

I am certain she wasn’t referring to a batch of freshly made home-baked cookies.

“Consumers hankering to show off their family photos — or their car or their dog — are getting more chances every time they whip out a credit card.

“LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A man can’t sue to make a court declare whether he’s the father of a child even if he’s listed as the father on the child’s birth certificate, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in a split decision.

The court barred Michael Barnes from filing suit because the child was conceived when the mother was married to another man. Michigan law presumes a husband is the legal father if a baby is conceived during a marriage.

Barnes lived with his girlfriend Kim Jeudevine and helped raise the child for more than four years until 2003, when their relationship ended. She hasn’t allowed him to see the child since.” - mlive.com

So-called coach

“‘I was at the end of my rope. I was ready to quit my job.’

Instead, Pitcher picked up the phone. But, like more and more modern Americans, she didn’t dial her mother, a friend or even a family therapist.

She called a coach — a so-called ‘parent coach’ — one of a new crop of professionals capitalizing on distressed parents’ growing fondness for seeking tricks from the pros.” - Chron.com

Teens these days

“All Minor J. wants to know from his mom is the name of the man who fathered him.

But the ruling Macomb County Circuit Judge Mark Switalski produces after a Monday hearing could set a dangerous legal precedent, experts said.

Minor J., whose identity is being protected by the court, is a 17-year-old from Fraser who is suing his mother after learning in 2004 that the man he thought was his father — his mother’s ex-husband — isn’t genetically related to him.” - Detroit Free Press

What a difference a day makes

Filed under: Yak — Big Poppa (aka Dez Williams) @ 8:03 am

My son’s sick… again. After hearing him grumble in his sleep, then witnessing his strange breathing patterns, we made a trip to our doctor in Brooklyn Heights – the neighborhood I love to hate because I can’t afford to live there.

The doc’s real chill, saw him doing the strange breathing thing – she had an official name for it – and decided he needed a breathing treatment via nebulizer. It sounds like some kind of torture you’d come across in a Star Trek episode, but it really just a machine that turns a liquid prescription into an inhalant.

The results were almost immediate. He stopped weezing and whining, warmed up to the crazy nurse, and took time to chit-chat with the pediatrician who expressed her happiness that I had brought him in and prescribed a respiratory suspension, Albuterol, and an antibiotic.

Antibiotics scare me, but there is no denying their immediate effects. He’s much better this morning and went to school with medicine in his lunch box and special instruction to administer after his nap since the medication makes him go a little bonkers.

The big in-fight

Filed under: Briefs — Big Poppa (aka Dez Williams) @ 3:25 pm

“As long as there have been parents and kids, there have been disagreements about discipline. Often this is a combination of which parent was first to witness the crime, how passionately each feels about the inappropriate behavior, the temperament and frustration tolerance differences between Mom and Dad, who is spending more time with the kids on a daily basis (and is therefore either more fed-up or oblivious to the behavior) and finally who feels most guilty about not spending enough time with the kids each day and chooses to let the little stuff go.” - MSNBC.com
